When God created the animals and man that walk on the earth, He made one general environment for all of them. That environment was the air they breathe; the atmosphere. The fish of the sea had an environment also. It is the water they live in. These environments are well suited for these creations to live in and by.
When we confessed Jesus as Lord, the Bible tells us we became a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). We were born by the will and Word of God (John 1:12-13; 1 Peter 1:23). We were re-created; born again, or, as we say, “saved.” We are also told by God’s Word that we are saved by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8). Putting this together, we can see that faith and God’s Word go together. Faith and God’s Word are the same; you cannot have faith without God’s Word and God’s Word is not without faith.
Actually, what we are getting at is that faith that comes from God’s Word is the atmosphere that the new creation lives in and by. The new man or the hidden man of the heart (1 Peter 3:4) lives by faith; the faith that comes by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17). The Bible speaks in three different places that “The just shall live by faith.” (Habakkuk 2:4, Romans 1:17 and Hebrews 10:38.)
To truly live as God would have us to live, as a people that are justified (Romans 5:1) and righteous (1 Corinthians 1:30) to be fully pleasing in His sight, we must live in the atmosphere He has provided—the atmosphere of faith (Hebrews 11:6).
Faith is not a tool given to us to use when we deem necessary or when the “going gets rough.” Faith is a way of life; not a one time experience.
Breathing is something we do because we are alive. Quit breathing and your life becomes very strained and difficult until you breathe again. Faith is like this to the new creation. You live by faith because you are a new creation. However, if you stop “faithing” life becomes strained and difficult. If life as a new creation has become strained and difficult, it is because you are not taking in the right atmosphere. You are not living by faith, but trying some other means. It could be the same for a fish to be out of the water, just floundering around in the wrong atmosphere.
So, let’s quit floundering around. Get in the Word; start believing it, saying it and living it. Then our atmosphere will be right.
